The author and creator of this Pay it Forward Volunteer Vacations Website and Blog, Karen Schaler, is a three-time Emmy award-winning multi-media writer and photographer specializing in travel. Schaler is the author of TRAVEL THERAPY: Where Do You Need to Go? (April 2009/Seal Press) featuring more than 100 unique destinations based on what you’re going through in life. Chapter Four is about Volunteer Vacations and because of the huge response she received on that chapter she was inspired to do an entire book on Volunteer trips.
Schaler’s work has appeared on television, in national newspapers, magazines and online. Some of her publishing credits include: THE NEW YORKER, THE BOSTON GLOBE, ABCNEWS.COM, TOWN AND COUNTRY TRAVELER, US AIRWAYS, AMERICA WEST, HEMISPHERES and ISLANDS magazine.
Schaler is also the founder & publisher of a new groundbreaking TRAVEL THERAPY website and blog www.traveltherapytrips.com.
Promoting her first book Schaler has appeared on top network television shows including: Good Morning America, The Today Show, Fox & Friends, MSNBC’s Countdown, CNN, etc.
With majors in Communications and Sociology, Schaler has traveled to more than 30 countries and has written more than 200 nationally published travel articles, including seven national magazine cover stories.
Schaler credits her hip, edgy writing style and her wanderlust spirit to her background as a television broadcast journalist. She was the first journalist ever embedded with troops in Bosnia and recently returned from being the first journalist embedded with a combat Apache helicopter unit on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border.
Schaler has worked as an on-air television correspondent for CNN, and has worked as a reporter/anchor at ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX affiliates in major markets across the country.
Schaler spent a month in Africa researching volunteer vacation options and after talking with the world-class Ambassadors for Children organization chose Malawi, Africa, for her first volunteer vacation experience.
Growing up outside of Seattle, Washington, Schaler has lived in ten different states and currently is based in NYC. Constantly globetrotting around the world, Schaler says her home now, “is wherever I put my suitcase.”
