BEFORE YOU GO

If you’re headed to a third-world country for your volunteer vacation chances are you’re going to need a long list of immunizations to make sure you’re protected and stay healthy on your trip.

Travel health requirements are changing all the time so your best bet is to check with the CDC for the most updated information and then take that list of what you need for travel immunizations to your local doctor to make sure you don’t miss anything.

I found a great resource for all my travel immunizations at the Passport health travel clinic. The staff specializes in immunizations for travelers so they didn’t even blink when I told them I needed shots for Afghanistan and Africa. They knew exactly what I needed and even printed up a pamphlet explaining the area I was traveling to and the medications I would be taking, etc.

Passport Health has offices across the country and every time I’ve gone I’ve found them to be much cheaper than my doctor’s office charges.

Beware though, almost always you’ll be asked to pay for your travel immunizations up front and they’re not cheap. Some insurance companies will reimburse you but many don’t so a lot of immunization offices are requiring that you pay them that day and then you have to try and get reimbursed from your insurance.

That said, be sure to get all the shots you need because this is not the time to skip anything to try and save money!
