THE BOOK
Pay it Forward: Volunteer Vacations
by: Karen Schaler
Coming Soon…
When I first started researching volunteer vacations for my TRAVEL THERAPY book I checked out several websites offering some generic information about specific upcoming trips but quickly found there wasn’t much written about this growing travel trend and the unique travel experience a volunteer vacation offers.
The seed was planted and I knew Pay it Forward: Volunteer Vacations would have to be my next book. The topic was just too important to let go of and I knew that if I was having trouble finding out about how to experience the best volunteer vacations other people could be struggling as well. People who were wanting to volunteer and “Pay it Forward” but needed some nudge in the right direction.
So I started contacting people who run some of the volunteer vacation programs to talk to them about their person experience and to find out more about how to pick the destination that will inspire you the most and where you can make the most difference depending on your skills and mindset.
Finally, I got on a plane and spent a month in Africa researching everything I could find about the topic and signing up for Volunteer Vacation of my own in Malawi.
By immersing myself in this inspiring travel experience and interviewing other volunteers and organizers about what they’ve learned and gained by traveling with a purpose, the Pay it Forward: Volunteer Vacations book is a unique combination of a smart “how to” guide along with personal stories from volunteers about how their vacations transformed their lives.
If you have your own volunteer vacation experience you’d like to share I’d love to hear it! Just leave a comment below.

Karen, thanks for the wonderful information you have provided. I am looking forward to the book.
Having been on the trip with you and the others I know we all share a lot of the same responses and others that are unique to each of us. I found that I was amazed at the love that was shown to everyone, especially in the orphanage. No one was left out, all children and adults received hugs and greetings. I believe that God puts us exactly where He wants us for His reasons. We are continually learning about ourselves as we learn about others. I learned a great deal about myself on this trip. We as Americans think that we have so much, but really we have nothing compared to what these children and adults have, they truly love God and appreciate what He gives them daily, life, love and what family they have whether or not they are blood relatives. To realize that every good gift comes from God, each breath that we take, everything we experience in life, He has His hand in. If I learned anything on this trip it is that I owe everything to God. The people of Malawi that we came in contact with were the ones that really ministered to US by showing us God’s love. You don’t have to have the best of everything, be widely known by the world, the biggest car or house or the most “toys” to be happy. You just have to have God live His love through us- that is what the Malawi children and adults have shown me.
